Mingi is a main rapper and dancer of ATEEZ.

He is the definition of the loser trapped in a hot body meme and we love him for it.

His rap signature is “Fix on”. This is both a call to lock in and focus on the verse, as well as wordplay, since when performed it sounds like his family name ‘Song’.

Mingi’s emoji is a chick 🐥. His Aniteez is a baby chick named bbyongMING.

We’re lucky in that Mingi’s rap verses are generally easily recognizable; they are husky and powerful and they contrast with Hongjoong’s more flowing and technical style really nicely. We’ve heard some of his more iconic verses already (but always worth a revisit 🔥): see HALAZIA (WHO ARE YOU 🫵), WONDERLAND, and Deja Vu, to name a few.

So this week we’ll be looking at some songs which show his versatility; we’ll be watching or listening to ARRIBA, DJANGO, and Youth.

  1. ARRIBA

ARRIBA is a B-side from the recent album THE WORLD EP.FIN : WILL (Dec 2023). The song encourages listeners to let go of their inhibitions, ignore their fears, and just give in to the rhythm of the dance. 💃

Mingi’s verse here (1:36) is quite addicting. It’s different from what we usually hear from him; higher-pitched and much more staccato to match the pointed rhythms.

<aside> <img src="/icons/language_gray.svg" alt="/icons/language_gray.svg" width="40px" /> Korean Spanish Time y’all

The song title means ‘Up’ or ‘Above’ in Spanish, perhaps referencing the album’s title track, Crazy Form, and its repeated theme “We go up” (also in Turbulence).

Spanish musical influences are not uncommon in ATEEZ’s discography. This song references ‘la cucaracha’ and the ‘cha-cha’, which are traditional Spanish folk dances. In addition, Mingi’s verse refers to Spanish artists like Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

Remember also 춤을 춰 (chumeul chwo), meaning ‘dance’? Listen for it twice in Yeosang’s pre-chorus here, the second time adding 광란의 (gwangnanui) ‘frantic’, to translate to “dance like crazy”.

  1. DJANGO

Up next is another amazing B-side, DJANGO, this time from their album THE WORLD EP.2 : OUTLAW (June 2023) 🤠. It’s a reference to the main character of the movie Django Unchained, and the lyrics describe the desire to live fearlessly and unstoppably, and to seize the moment as we navigate life which is often unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Mingi is blonde here and he is featured at 1:18, 1:56, and 2:31.

[Apologies for the fancam; this was the best version I could find! But some bonus San for you here also 😘]

  1. Youth

Youth is a unit song also from the album THE WORLD EP.FIN : WILL (Dec 2023), and it’s a song that Mingi himself wrote, composed, and arranged. It’s performed by Mingi and Yunho, and it speaks about the heavy struggles of adolescence, expectation, loneliness, and finding one’s place.

Mingi is in the dark sweater/brown jacket/blue suit and sings at 0:24, 1:10, and 3:03.
